Occupational therapy briefly explained

Occupational therapy helps people who are impaired in their everyday and professional abilities due to physical, psychological or cognitive limitations to improve their independence. Through individually adapted therapies, including adapting the environment and using specific activities, it promotes participation in social life and aims to improve quality of life.

Our treatments

  • Our occupational therapy treatment for children focuses on sensorimotor-functional development. The therapeutic approach is individually tailored to each child and is based on comprehensive diagnostics and goal setting in close cooperation with the parents and, if necessary, other specialists involved.

Therapeutic approach: The therapeutic approach is holistic and includes both physical and psychosocial aspects. We use special exercises and activities aimed at promoting the child's motor skills, sensory processing and self-regulation. Through playful approaches, we create a motivating environment in which the child can discover and develop his or her abilities. We also place value on promoting initiative and independence in everyday situations.

    Disorders and areas treated:

    • Sensorimotor disorders: We treat children with difficulties in gross and fine motor skills, which can manifest themselves, for example, in clumsy movements or difficulties in writing.

    • Sensory integration disorders: We support children who have problems processing sensory information with specific exercises that help to sharpen perception and respond appropriately to environmental stimuli.

    • Developmental delays: If there are delays in motor or cognitive development, we offer targeted support to support the child in his or her overall development.

    • Coordination difficulties: Improving coordination and balance is the focus when children have problems coordinating their movements in everyday life or during sports.

    Methods and techniques:

    • Fine motor skills training: Through targeted exercises we improve manual dexterity and graphomotor skills.

    • Movement therapy: With the help of movement courses and special sports and play equipment, we strengthen gross motor skills and balance.

    • Sensory training: Various materials and media are used to promote sensory integration.

    • Advice and guidance for parents: An important part of our therapy is the involvement and advice of parents. We provide tips and exercises that can be implemented at home to support the success of the therapy.

Our goal is to support each child in their individual development and to enable them to experience their environment actively and independently. By working closely with parents and other professionals, we create comprehensive care that is precisely tailored to the needs and potential of the child.

  • Our occupational therapy treatment for adults focuses on sensorimotor-functional rehabilitation. This treatment is tailored and based on a careful initial assessment, shared goal setting and planning in close consultation with the patient and, where appropriate, their families and other involved healthcare professionals.

Our approach takes the patient's entire personality and life situation into account. The therapeutic program is designed to improve motor functions, sensory processing skills and the ability to care for oneself. We use a wide range of activities and exercises that are specifically designed to promote independence in everyday life, work and leisure. Through a combination of functional exercises, training in everyday activities and counseling sessions, we support our patients in achieving their individual therapy goals.

    Disorders and areas treated:

    • Sensorimotor impairments: We provide support for people with limited mobility or motor coordination, which can often be the result of strokes, injuries or chronic illnesses.

    • Neurological disorders: Treatment aims to help people with conditions such as multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease or after a stroke to regain and improve their motor skills and sensory processing.

    • Cognitive and perceptual disorders: In the case of difficulties in information processing, memory problems or attention deficits, solutions are worked on using targeted strategies and techniques.

    • Limitations in self-care and daily life: Targeted interventions help to strengthen or regain the skills for independent living.

    Methods and techniques:

    • Functional training: This includes targeted exercises to improve motor control, strength and endurance.

    • Fine motor and dexterity training: Includes specific tasks and exercises aimed at improving hand function and coordination.

    • Cognitive training: Focuses on improving cognitive functions such as memory, problem solving and planning skills.

    • Advice and training: An essential part of therapy is advice and training for patients and their relatives to make it easier to deal with the illness in everyday life and to promote independence.

Our goal is to promote participation in professional and social life and to improve the quality of life of our patients. The individual therapy concept is continuously adapted to the progress and changing needs of the patients in order to ensure optimal support.

  • Our motor-functional treatment for patients is aimed at people who experience limitations in their motor skills due to injuries, illnesses or age-related changes. The aim is to improve motor skills and functions in order to achieve the greatest possible independence and quality of life.

The therapeutic approach in our facility is individually tailored and begins with a comprehensive assessment of the motor status and functional abilities of each patient. Based on this assessment and the patient's personal goals, we develop a customized treatment plan. Our approach is holistic and takes into account both physical and psychological components of rehabilitation. We use a combination of active and passive techniques, including targeted exercises, manual therapy and counseling.

    Disorders and areas treated:

    • Gross motor limitations: We treat patients who have difficulty moving large muscle groups, which can affect the ability to perform basic movements such as walking, standing or sitting.

    • Fine motor disorders: Our therapy supports people with impairments in hand and finger dexterity, which affects everyday activities such as writing, pressing buttons or grasping.

    • Postoperative rehabilitation: After surgical interventions on the musculoskeletal system, we work with patients to restore mobility and strength.

    • Chronic pain syndromes: For chronic pain conditions that affect motor function, we offer therapeutic strategies to relieve pain and improve function.

    Methods and techniques:

    • Active exercises for strengthening and mobilization: Through individually adapted exercise programs, we promote the strength, endurance and mobility of the patients.

    • Manual therapy: Use of specific hand-grip techniques to improve joint mobility and reduce pain.

    • Ergonomic advice and provision of aids: We train patients in the ergonomic handling of their bodies in everyday life and at work and advise on the use of aids if necessary.

    • Homework programs: To support continuous improvement outside of therapy sessions, we provide individual exercise plans.

Our primary goal is to promote the independence and participation of our patients in their personal, home and professional environments. Through regular re-evaluation, we adapt the treatment plan to the patient's progress and changing needs to ensure optimal care.

  • Our brain performance training is aimed at people who experience limitations in their cognitive functions due to neurological diseases, brain injuries or age-related changes. The aim of this specialized form of therapy is to maintain and improve cognitive performance in order to increase the everyday independence and quality of life of those affected.

The therapeutic concept of brain performance training is based on an individual diagnosis of each patient's cognitive abilities. Based on this comprehensive initial assessment and the patient's personal goals, we develop an individually tailored treatment plan. This plan includes special exercises and strategies aimed at specifically promoting memory, attention, logical thinking, problem-solving skills and other cognitive functions. Our approach is holistic and includes not only cognitive training but also psychosocial support.

    Disorders and areas treated:

    • Memory disorders: We offer training sessions for patients with short- and long-term memory difficulties.

    • Attention deficits: People with problems with attention span and concentration are supported through targeted exercises.

    • Cognitive impairment after a stroke: We use specific rehabilitative measures to promote cognitive recovery after a stroke.

    • Degenerative diseases: In patients with dementia or Parkinson's disease, we work on preserving cognitive abilities and slowing down the disease process.

    Methods and techniques:

    • Memory training: We support the ability to memorize and remember things through special memory training exercises.

    • Attention and concentration training: Targeted tasks promote the ability to concentrate for longer periods of time and to control attention.

    • Executive function training: exercises to improve planning and problem-solving skills and to promote flexibility in thinking.

    • Technology-assisted therapy approaches: Use of computer programs and apps specifically developed for cognitive training.

Our goal is to maintain and strengthen cognitive functioning as much as possible in order to promote independence in everyday life and facilitate participation in social life. Through regular assessments, we continuously adapt the therapy plan to the patient's progress and needs in order to ensure effective and targeted support.

  • Our psychological-functional treatment is aimed at people who experience limitations in their everyday and professional lives due to mental illnesses or emotional disorders. The aim of this therapeutic approach is to strengthen mental health, develop coping strategies for dealing with stress and thus improve the quality of life and independence of those affected.

The basis of our psychological-functional treatment is a thorough diagnostic assessment that captures the individual psychological needs and challenges of each patient. Based on this assessment and in close cooperation with the patient, personal therapy goals are defined and a tailor-made treatment plan is developed. Our approach is holistic and includes both psychotherapeutic elements and functional activities aimed at promoting emotional regulation, social skills and general participation in life.

    Disorders and areas treated:

    • Affective disorders: Support for people with depression or bipolar disorder to improve mood regulation.

    • Anxiety disorders: Interventions to manage anxiety and promote relaxation and stress management.

    • Personality and behavioral disorders: Developing strategies to improve interpersonal skills and promote adaptive behavior patterns.

    • Psychosocial conflicts and stress: support in coping with life crises or difficult life circumstances.

    Methods and techniques:

    • Behavioral therapy techniques: By using behavioral therapy methods, we work on changing dysfunctional thought and behavior patterns.

    • Relaxation techniques: Techniques such as progressive muscle relaxation or mindfulness training to reduce stress and increase well-being.

    • Occupational therapy daily life and action training: Targeted activities and exercises to improve daily functioning and promote independence.

    • Creative forms of therapy: Use of art, music or movement therapy as a means of emotional expression and for dealing with inner psychological conflicts.

Our goal is to increase the psychological resilience of our patients, to provide them with effective coping strategies and to enable them to lead their lives actively and independently. Through regular progress assessments, we ensure that the therapy plan is continuously adapted to the patient's needs and developments in order to guarantee optimal care and support.

reception

  • Our reception is available from 7am to 8pm every day and we always endeavour to process your requests promptly. We understand that there are times when you may not be able to reach us directly. If this is the case, please do not hesitate to send us an email or use our online request function.

We are committed to helping you as quickly as possible and answering any questions you may have. Your concerns are important to us and we will do everything we can to ensure you have a smooth and pleasant experience.

  • It is not easy to give a blanket answer as to when we will be able to offer appointments. In some cases, we have short-term gaps in the calendar that allow us to offer appointments within a very short time.

We recommend that you contact us as early as possible so that we can find a suitable time together. If you have an urgent need, let us know and we will do our best to assist you as quickly as possible.

  • We do not offer appointments on Saturdays as our practice is closed over the weekend. Our goal is to provide you with the best possible service during regular opening hours Monday to Friday.

  • In principle, we endeavour to plan and carry out your entire treatment with a single therapist in order to ensure consistent care. However, there may be situations in which this is not always possible due to appointment availability. In such cases, we may have to schedule appointments with another therapist in our practice. In occupational therapy, a change of therapist only occurs in very rare cases.

While we understand that this may not be ideal, we want you to know that there may be benefits to changing therapists. For example, you may benefit from different perspectives, techniques and skills that will enrich your therapeutic experience and help you get the most out of your therapy.

To ensure a seamless continuation of your treatment, we place great importance on detailed documentation of your therapy course. This enables us to ensure a comprehensive handover between therapists so that your treatment continuity is maintained, regardless of who conducts the therapy session.

  • For your comfort and a stress-free journey to our location, we have set up sufficient free parking spaces for our patients both directly in front of and behind our building. We attach great importance to ensuring that every visit to us is as pleasant as possible. That is why we ensure that our parking spaces are barrier-free and offer easy access to the main entrance and the elevators. This enables all patients, regardless of their mobility, to reach us easily and concentrate fully on their health.

  • With us you have the option of paying your additional payments either in cash or by debit card.

Organizational

  • First appointment in occupational therapy: A brief overview

Diagnostics: Your journey to our practice typically begins with an initial consultation, to which you bring your prescription. This appointment can take place either directly in our practice or, if necessary, at your home. The aim is to establish initial personal contact and to carry out a disorder-specific assessment. For this purpose, we use various occupational therapy test procedures that enable us to understand and evaluate your individual situation precisely.

Consultation: Based on the results of the assessment, we develop a therapy plan that is specifically tailored to your needs. This plan includes professional treatment that meets both scientific standards and is geared towards your personal goals. During the consultation, we will inform you in detail about the causes and possible effects of your disorder. Together, we will discuss the planned therapy content and determine the therapy priorities, with your wishes and ideas playing a key role.

Preparing for the first appointment: To make the diagnosis and planning process as effective as possible, we ask you to bring relevant doctor's reports, X-rays or MRI images, and any existing aids, such as splints, to the first appointment. These documents help us to get a comprehensive picture of your health situation and to tailor the therapy to your needs.

At your first appointment, we lay the foundation for the further course of your occupational therapy treatment. Our goal is to support you as best as possible and to work together to bring about positive changes in your everyday life.

  • Please arrive on time for your appointment so that you have the opportunity to change appointment times or ask questions. It is best to arrive 10 minutes before the start of treatment.

  • Costs for occupational therapy in our practice

    1. Statutory health insurance companies: In Germany, statutory health insurance companies usually cover the costs of prescribed occupational therapy. However, as a patient, you must make a co-payment, which is usually 10% of the treatment costs plus 10 euros per prescription.

    2. Private health insurance: For those with private insurance, the cost coverage depends on the individual contract. We recommend that you contact your insurance company before starting therapy to ensure that the costs are covered.

    3. Specialized treatments: Special forms of therapy or additional services (such as home visits) may incur additional costs. These should be discussed with us in advance.

  • Deadlines for occupational therapy at the König Fitness & Health Center

The following deadlines must be observed for occupational therapy:

    • Prescription start: The prescription should be started within 28 days of issue.

    • Interruptions: The prescription may be interrupted for a maximum of 70 days in total, although interruptions of less than 14 days are not included.

    • Billing: The prescription must be billed no later than 9 months after it was issued.

If you have any further questions about deadlines or scheduling, our team will be happy to help you.

  • When scheduling appointments, we try to take your wishes into account. If you are unable to attend the agreed appointment, please inform us at least 24 hours in advance. This is the only way we can reassign the appointment. We reserve the right to charge a cancellation fee. To cancel an appointment, use our contact form or call us.

Before your appointment

  • We recommend wearing clothes that you can move easily in, such as trousers and a T-shirt. Depending on the treatment, it may also be a good idea to wear trainers. For children, it is a good idea to bring anti-slip socks.

  • The duration of occupational therapy treatments in our practice is directly dependent on the instructions and specifications noted on your doctor's prescription. Depending on which specific treatment your doctor has prescribed for you, the times for the therapy sessions may be adjusted accordingly.

Generally, our treatments start at a minimum of 20 minutes per session, from start to finish. However, depending on the type of therapy prescribed and individual requirements, a treatment session can last significantly longer - in certain cases between 45 to 60 minutes or even longer.

We always strictly follow medical guidelines and recommendations to ensure that you receive the best treatment for you. During your first visit, we will discuss your treatment plan in detail based on the doctor's prescription to give you a clear overview of the expected duration and frequency of your therapy.

Your health and well-being are our top priority, and we strive to make each therapy session as effective and enjoyable as possible.

  • To make your visit with us as smooth and pleasant as possible, we would like to take a few preparatory steps together with you. This includes checking your prescription for correctness, processing the co-payment, obtaining your data protection consent, completing our questionnaire and clarifying organizational issues. All of this is important to ensure that we can concentrate fully on your treatment.

In order to ensure a relaxed process for you and our entire team without time pressure, we ask you to report to our reception about 10-15 minutes before your treatment appointment. This gives us the time we need to make all the necessary preparations in peace and quiet and then provide you with the best possible care.

We look forward to supporting you and thank you very much for your cooperation and understanding.

  • In general, it is important for your body and your health to drink enough water. To ensure the treatment is successful, we recommend that you pay particular attention to this before and after treatment. You should also avoid eating a heavy meal immediately before treatment, if this is possible for you.

  • We would like to point out that it is essential that you bring your doctor's prescription with you to your first appointment. Without this important document, we will unfortunately not be able to treat you. The prescription not only tells us what treatment has been prescribed by your doctor, but also informs us of the intended frequency and number of appointments required. This information is crucial in order to create an individual treatment plan for you and ensure that you receive the best possible support.

During your appointment

  • The first step in our occupational therapy treatment begins with the anamnesis. In this important initial conversation, we take the time to get to know you and your individual situation in detail. We discuss your medical history, current complaints, as well as your personal goals and wishes in relation to therapy. This conversation serves to gain a comprehensive understanding of your life situation and to determine how it is influenced by your health restrictions. The anamnesis is fundamental for the further course of therapy, as it enables us to optimally tailor the treatment to your needs.

  • Based on the medical history, a targeted occupational therapy examination follows. We use various standardized and specific test procedures to evaluate your motor skills, cognitive functions and/or psychosocial skills. The examination helps us to precisely identify the impairments in your everyday activities and determine your current functional status. This objective assessment of your abilities is essential for planning targeted therapy.

  • Using the findings from the anamnesis and examination, we develop an individual treatment plan that aims to improve your independence and participation in everyday life. The treatment is varied and can include different therapeutic measures depending on your needs and goals. This can include motor-functional exercises, cognitive training, craft and design techniques, as well as advice and adaptation of aids. Throughout the entire treatment, we attach great importance to working closely with you in order to continuously adapt the therapy process to your progress and ensure that the therapy goals are achieved.

  • In order to ensure a high quality of treatment in our practice and to closely track the progress of each patient, we attach great importance to comprehensive and accurate documentation. This process is a central part of our practice philosophy and enables us to tailor and adapt the therapy to your individual needs.

In order to integrate documentation into the treatment process as efficiently and seamlessly as possible, we use specialised practice software. This enables us to store all relevant information securely and clearly.

One of the great advantages of this software is its flexibility and accessibility. Each of our therapists has direct access to the software via mobile phones and tablets. This allows the treatment team to view and update important information and treatment details at any time - whether directly at the treatment location, between appointments or in meetings. The ability to access patient data from different devices ensures seamless communication within the team and helps us to optimize your treatment.

After your appointment

  • Your body needs to recover after treatment/workout. Drink plenty of water to help your pain area recover. The same goes for sleep. Try your best to get a good night's rest after your treatment.

  • Once you have felt the beneficial effects of your treatment with us, we invite you to continue on this positive path. It is important to actively work on your health not only during, but also after therapy. That's why we have put together a special offer for our patients, allowing you to continue working on your fitness and health in our fitness studio under expert supervision.

Take advantage of the opportunity to benefit from our expertise even outside of treatment times. Our qualified team is on hand to guide your progress and support you in your quest for a healthy lifestyle. This is an excellent opportunity to reinforce and maintain the results of your therapy in the long term.

Remember: your health is an investment, not an expense. Take advantage of our offer and continue on the positive course you are already on. We look forward to accompanying and supporting you on this journey.

  • If you feel the positive changes in your body, do not hesitate to share your experience with your family and friends. We would also appreciate a "thank you", either personally or as a Google review! Your recommendations and recognition are of great value to us.
